Interview with Johannes Saturday, October 3, 2009
Why Do My Legs Burn All Day
casts light on a possible tour to South America
Them In Crooked Vultures are the leader of Foo Fighters (and former Nirvana), former Led Zeppelin bassist and brain Queens of the Stone Age . Among them is the trans-Andean musician, who taught him to play bass to Flea of Chili Peppers. All
band has their second, in the ordinal sense of the word. Few remember the name of the non-Aerosmith or Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, let alone know the members of No Doubt Gwen Stefani past and very few can name those that come with Scott Weiland Stone Temple Pilots. But the truth is that without one there is no other and all the stars need someone to touch them (and, especially, the bank). The multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes occupies that position in the new supergroup of the moment: Crooked Them Vultures, a combo made up Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters ) on drums, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass and Josh Homme ( Queens of the Stone Age ) on guitar and vocals. Born in Chile in 1962, Johannes went to Europe three years, then lived in Mexico until 1974, when he moved to Los Angeles.

At school, the musician met three guys who would change life: Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons and Michael Balzary. The legend says Johannes taught her to play the bass Balzary, who, by their frantic movements, she received the nickname Flea ("flea"). Alain is brief and modest in his response when questioned him about it: "I just gave a boost to low and showed him the basics, he began as a natural and talented musician." The four gave life to Anthym, later called What Is This , ancestor of the group Red Hot Chili Peppers. While Flea , Irons and Slovak joined the young Anthony Kiedis, Johannes followed by his side with his wife, Natasha Shneider, and formed Eleven , banda joining the Irons after the overdose death of Slovak . At the same time, with epicenter in Seattle, the grunge was brewing, and guys like Eddie Vedder , Chris Cornell, Matt Cameron , Mark Lanegan, Laine Staley and Johannes own began to know slowly.
"Eleven was on many tours with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Queens of the Stone Age " Johannes tells Pagina/12 from Los Angeles. "That was the friendship and musical collaboration with Chris Cornell and Josh Homme " he explains. Natasha and Alain entered QOTSA and participated in the Desert Sessions -hung the ten records that had to Homme as creative core, though they also worked playing and composing, until they Natasha died July 2, 2008. The list of artists who had to Johannes in the production, arrangements and recording includes names like No Doubt , Mondo Generator , Silverchair, Chris Cornell , Spinnerette and The Gutter Twins.

But Johannes is Them Crooked Vultures, a band with which he recorded as part of the disc which brings live guitar and vocals, "to enhance the sound," according to explains. That sound little is known so far, as the disc issue date is unknown and only listen to the band itself makes known through Twitter, YouTube, MySpace and Facebook. A good way-and very appropriate to these times, to generate expectations: while many labels trying to prohibit the illegal distribution of music from its artists, Vultures encourage and use the amateur videos filmed by fans as a form of promotion. "I think it was part of the process that began with the group's ideas," reveals Alain . Without doubt, these are people who, despite not being young pop products, knows how to use new tools. Until there is some official information, so little is known is that some issues are called "Elephants", "Scumbag Blues," "Nobody Loves me and Neither Do I" and "Dead End Friends." "The sound is strong and organic, saturated, aggressive and raw, with plenty of groove and improvisation," says Johannes , leaving aside the enigma. "Influences? "The sum total of its parts" he says. Johannes
confesses he remembers little of his native Chile, but handles quite well Castilian. " Hopefully next year we can make a South American tour with Vultures" he says, complacent, while acknowledging that they know little of the rock that sounds in these parts: "After so much noise I listen to other music, classical or jazz, but I'm open to suggestions about which bands to pay attention, "he said. And if you review their history, probably does not say because you need contacts.
